Finally I get to pretend I live in D.C.

I got Fallout 3 for Christmas from my parents. I probably once received Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for Christmas from my parents as well, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I am going to bring my 360 machine back to Chicago so I can play this game and NBA 2k9. Burglars take note.
Thus far, I've played through the beginning youth section and made it out of the Vault. It isn't much of a game yet. The vault section is a "Half-Lite" version of the Cave of Trials, or perhaps more accurately the escape from prison in Oblivion, with a dash of Halo 1 space ship escape intro. The combat system seems really lacking thus far, but thus far my character has no skills, so we'll see. I hate having to shoot a dude ten or more times before that dude dies. In Oblivion, it was ridiculous, that's for sure, but at least there is a strong precedent in video games for having to swing a sword at an unarmed dude several times before he/it hits the ground. When you shoot something in a real time video game you don't expect it to absorb bullets like your shootin' dirt, unless it's got like eight heads and is 20 feet tall.

Anyway, we'll see. I think that I will post my review of Fallout 3 in sections as I play and then summarize it when I beat it. It'll be a joy to read. I'll work harder on the rest of the Fallout3 posts too. Ok, I gotta go eat some pie. Check ya later, imaginary readership.

How many times do you think a Bethesda staffer has sat around and noodled through the Morrowind Melody and felt really proud? I bet it happens at least once a day in the staff room during lunch break at Bethesda.

Pau Gasol is ugly.

It's not enough for Pau Gasol to spend all his time on national television looking like the intersection between an underfed bridge troll and a freshman frisbee player who's considering a major in geology at Wesleyan. He has to neglect, yet again, to shave that heavily "neck-focused" teenage pseudo-beard for what should have been a classy, well groomed Christmas day in the NBA. Come on, you gangly be-brothered Spaniard, buy a damn razor or a mirror or whatever you need to fix that situation, it's Christmas.  Also, close your mouth once, just for a few moments. Honestly,  I don't want to see your uvula ten times a game.
On the other hand, K.G. and Kobe played tonight. Nuff said. Moving on to less important things.

The Lakers beat the Celtics and ended their 19 game winning streak.

Do you want to know why this happened?
Well, drawing upon my nearly infinite knowledge of basketball, powerful spiritual awareness, and connection with Lakota indian mysticism, I can tell you that the Lakers won this game because they played passionate unselfish basketball. I'm sure Phil Jackson was proud. But like those great Bulls teams he coached in the 90's, these Lakers have so much talent that unselfishness is rewarded in dramatic fashion.
Let's not get this wrong, Kobe won this game for the Lakers, he played brilliantly (notably not as brilliantly as he can, but still brilliantly). But at the end, when it mattered, Kobe Bryant drew the double coverage and got Mr. Bridge Troll involved...and our man converted. It was amazing. The Lakers made putting the game out of reach look easy and they did it against the best defense in the league and one of the best defenses ever.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that this Lakers team is as deep on offense as a Jenko Jeans pocket, but instead of holding countless crumpled-up 8th grade boy-drawings of pistols and band logos, and some county-fair-purchased candy cigarettes, it holds: Andrew Bynum, Sasha Vujacic, Ariza, Luke "Your dad is a clown" Walton, and Lamar Odom.
Damn. DAMN!  The Celtics have Powe...and ah, and uhm, Eddie House, and...Tony Allen off the bench. I guess technically Luke "Your dad is a clown" Walton is starting now, but that's just cause they don't have a clue what to do with their two squads of starting line-up players.
Anyway, what a horrible game. Fuck L.A., GO CELTICS! and Paul: please shave your pseudo-beard! You're opening me up for a retaliation post.
Check y'all later, Merry Christmas, Happy sixth night of Hanukkah.

Notes on a "Genesis Party" (part four)

Found by BV: Attraction Stage from "Sonic Crackers"--a game I never played.

Carnival Night Zone from Sonic 3. Another Michael Jackson track, supposedly. Though Marble Zone from the first Sonic has some Michael Jackson sounding stuff, too.

Notes on a "Genesis Party" (part three)

Streets of Rage!!!!

We may not need to have a genesis party at all. The goldmine that is Streets of Rage 2 is vast enough to shoulder the entire burden, I think. I am transfixed hearing this stuff. My mind is back to playing two player co-op with my brother: me, as the skating kid racing around excited, losing life after life after life, him as a burly man doing the real work of hitting even burlier men over the head with pool cues. Through the big windows, the sun's oranger, redder rays shine on us as a long Saturday afternoon turns slowly into night. We squint, close the blinds. On screen, a dance music breakdown that the Arthur Russell likers might even like, and a giant freight elevator taking me and my brother up to the rooftop layer of a very aggro boss. A moment of peace, a single lost instant before the beat began to build: he and I must have stood there, triumphantly alone, on the rising platform. Then on to the next episode...

Notes on a "Genesis Party" (part one)

DLHB and I have been talking, in varying degrees of seriousness, for a long time about a hosting a party using Sega Genesis music instead of the usual hip-hop/indie/french-electro/that-one-CAN-song fare. We're just not quite sure whether people would dance to this stuff as much as we would. So, I'm going to post a few of my favorite tracks and hope for a little input.

From Road Rash: Pacific Coast

From Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Metropolis Zone
It hasn't been a golden age in my gaming life of late because (and this was a while back now) someone broke into my apartment at 5:30 in the morning and made off with my XBox 360 and all of the games for it. So, even though I'm sure DLHB and I would otherwise have a lot of important opinions about the freshest and most important topics, and would be appropriately disappointed with Fallout 3, our purview has been limited almost exclusively to fantasy basketball and the occasional emulated 16-bit game.

That said, fantasy basketball is fantastically great. When asked recently what I got my competitive edge from by an outsider I had the privilege of saying, "obsessive compulsive disorder." I thought that was neat because it was true.

As for 16-bit emulation, may I strongly recommend Pirate's Gold. Keep in mind that I am not a purist and have never played the much more feted computer game and once rented this particular version in 1994. The slower-paced, too-Japanese version of the game (which I also rented and actually had a stronger fondness for) is Uncharted Waters 2.
